Everyday we get a new basket of opportunities.
For every opportunity we are given everyday we have three choices:
Pass. Not for me.
Maybe. But not today.
Thanks. Time to get to work.
Each minute we get to choose something. From what we say, what we eat, what we buy, where we go, to what we do.
Why Say No? Why Say Yes?
Sometimes we already know that something is not a good idea. It will not help us get to where we are going and it will not make our lives easier. This knowledge can be from past experiences and stories of another’s experience.
Every other time we say no it is because we do not believe we can do it. We do not think we have the abilities to work through the challenges to reach the end result.
When we say Yes, we know we can do it. We believe we can do it. We know the challenges between us and the earning the rewards of the opportunity are worth it. We know it will not always be smooth sailing but we want it.
Why Do We Give Up?
Why do we stop doing something? The first reason is that it was the wrong choice for us. We learn by doing. Trying something new is the best way to learn what you like and don’t like.
This is why many high schools have co-op programs. This is why college and university programs have weeding courses and internships. Those weeding courses are there to see who will do the work and is more likely to make it the full way through the program. Co-op placements and internships are a chance for students to learn if that career is for them because classrooms cannot fully mimic real life.
We need to try a lot of things try a lot of things to learn what is absolutely not for us, what might be for us someday but we’re not ready yet, and what is definitely for us.
We give up because of our limits.
