No pressure but someone is always looking towards you for guidance on how to behave, what to do, how to treat others, work, and achieve goals.
We are all role models and leaders.
You don’t have to have any official titles of “leader”, “manager”, “influencer”, “boss” etc to be a role model. All you have to do to is to live a positive life others can see, to be there when someone needs help, guidance or just someone to listen to them, and to be someone who is willing to help and guide others without any expectations of recognition.
Share your stories. Someone else out there needs to hear it so they can get through the same problem in their life.
You don’t need to be loud to be a role model
Not all role models are loud.
The best leaders give space for others to speak and ensure they are heard. To encourage others to speak up in meetings, ask them for their thought about something. Their ideas are important. Yet, asking for their opinion may be easier for them to give if they are nervous.
Other role models just show up and do their best every day.
They don’t complain about anything. They are willing to help others. They are willing to step up when needed to help others in their work. They are also constant learners so they can continue to do the best job they can. They are also those people who work just as hard in the unseen hours as they do in the seen hours.
Always Take Care of Yourself First.
The put your oxygen mask on first rule on airplanes is true in your everyday life.
If you want to be a great role model, then take care of yourself before anyone else.
Ed Mylett often talks about how many lessons and habits in life are caught not taught. It is true. Kids, co-workers, siblings, neighbours, anyone in your life is watching. They see if you clean up your dishes right away or leave them for later, they are watching if you hold the door for another, and they are listening to what you say and how you say it.
Taking care of yourself is the same. If you don’t take care of your body and mental health. How can you set a good role to model for others? They are watching and mimicking exactly what you do. And if they don’t like it they will likely stop interacting with you as much or leave you behind.
Manners Never Take Vacations
To be a great role model remember your manners and be generous with them.
Say thank you, your welcome and other compliments whenever you can to show appreciation to those around you. Those simple words and signs of respect and appreciation can inspire them to do a great job and to keep learning so they may have the influence like you have on them over someone else eventually.
We all need a role model(s).
Make being an everyday role model a habit in your life to inspire others.
