When you choose to stop learning you begin to die.

Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty.
~ Henry Ford

We are all lifelong students of many things. But how many of us actually realize and set aside time every day to learn? Not many I think.

Learning 45 minutes daily is the second habit I am building into my life. Because I want to change my life in the next 52-weeks.

I have goal of having conversational level French abilities by the end of the year. As well as working learning about several other subjects that interest me.

Learning Shouldn’t be a Chore.

When you finish your “formal” education for the most part you get to choose what to learn next.

You no longer have to read that book you can’t get interested in. You can read whatever book you want to. For the rest of your life you can learn about whatever subject you want. There will set be required work related continuing education. Yet, for the most part you get to do what you want in your free time.

Learning is one of the best ways to consistently challenge yourself to expand your comfort zone.

The Amount of Time Doesn’t Matter

I am choosing to set aside 45-minutes everyday to learn. Some days I might do more but my minimum is the 45-minuets.

Setting aside 45 minutes at once seems like a lot to instantly have to work into your routine. It is not a lot of time when you break in into three 15-minute blocks of time.

So I have three 15-minute blocks of time set aside to learn. 15-minutes in the morning and two sets of 15-minutes in the evening. That is easily doable for me.

You Can Learn About More Than One Topic at a Time

I know I am going to get board easily and skip learning if the topic for me is always working on French.

So I am spending time every day researching other topics I am interested in right now. One of the is learning about hybrid wine grape varieties. Why wine grapes? Because I have always said that I’ll be the one in my family to take our hobby family vineyard commercial.

Find topics that interest you. Spend a time everyday learning about them before you give yourself permission to watch the four-hours of television the average adult watches daily. We don’t need to be entertained like zombies for four hours everyday.

Learn for You. Not For Them.

There are five important things for living a successful and fulfilling life: never stop dreaming, never stop believing, never give up, never stop trying, and never stop learning.
Roy Bennett

If you want to change your life you have to start learning more about your passions and topics that you know you need to learn.

Your life is not going to change if you don’t:

  1. Put YOU first
  2. DO the work.

You have to do the work for you. Your partner, children, parents, friends, …. might benefit greatly from you doing the work. So you can save yourself (and them) financially. BUT you are going to be benefitted the most.

It is going to be hard to get into the habit of learning every single day. You take it from me, it is possible.

Everyday is not going to be perfect. Some days you’ll do more studying than others. The only fact that matters is if you consistently stick to it your efforts will accumulate. Before you know it you’ll realize that you are starting to be able to instantly recognize and understand words in French that before you couldn’t.

I’m working three sets of 15-minutes into my day to learn for me. Because I want to always be challenging my limits. I don’t want to settle for limited knowledge on topics that interest me and I know will benefit my future self.

For the next 50 weeks I will be adding one new habit into my life every week. So one year from now I will have changed my life for the better. This year is going to be my greatest year yet.

I am the only one who can change my life. Just like you are the only one who can change your life. No one is coming to rescue us. The only way to change is to start working and consistently show up for what we want to change in our lives.
